King Kenny for £440,000 from Celtic to Liverpool was good, but it was a transfer record at the time.

I reckon the greatest snip of a deal was Cantona for a £1m from Leeds to the scum.

I cannot believe a Liverpool fan would make such a point.

Liverpool got 14 years service out of the £440,000 they invested in Kenny ffs. Add to that a small matter of 3 European cups (how many did Cantona win ? ) and I think you have your answer.

Edit : I should have added that i.m.o., Bob Paisley was Liverpool's greatest ever signing.

Knew I would get that sort of reaction after I posted this, but the point I`m trying to make is, what club made the best speculative signing for as little as possible?

King Kenny was already regarded as a class act!

On that logic, then I'd still name at least a half dozen Liverpool players before Cantona, because he only helped the Mancs to League titles, they failed miserably in Europe during his time there.

For example Clemence, Neal, Hansen (as mentioned by Cobs), Keegan, McDermott, Alan Kennedy could all be described as "speculative" but went on to pick up League Titles and European Cups with Liverpool.

Cantona was hardly an unknown quantity at the time. He'd just helped Leeds to the title.

Keegan was a great signing. In six years he helped us to three titles, two UEFA Cups, one European Cup and an FA Cup and then we sold him for more than 14 times what we'd paid for him and used that money to buy our greatest ever player.
