Why do people clap?

This is something which i've never quite got to grips with (and im probably the only one), but why do people feel a need to make a noise by smacking limbs together? Who on earth was the first person to suddenly decide "I like what I am seeing here, I will make a noise"...

 

I just find it weird sometimes when I see huge audiences clapping and some one else....
