Summer travel plans

We want to do a trip in France and Spain from Manchester without flying..

So thinking of Eurostar/coach/ferry to France --> stay in Paris for 4/5 days (work), head south to French Basqueland and then into Spanish Basqueland and was hoping to get a ferry from Bilbao or Santander to Plymouth or Portsmouth.

But the ferry prices are astronomical £400 each for a single..

 

Instead of swimming or rafting back or having to traipse back thro France, altho it wouldn't be such a tragedy if that happened...how else can we get back without flying??
