Anybody had their emails monitored at work before?

 

I am part of a small team with a direct line manager - we have discovered today that my she is monitoring all of our emails in and out of the company. I am aware that all of these mails are company property etc etc but some of the emails are to and from a colleague who recently had a cancer scare and their are emails discussing this with his family.

 

I believe that you are not allowed to monitor emails covertly unless they are part of a possible criminal investigation. I have already brought this to the attention of HR about 6 months ago and the constant monitoring stopped but has now started up again.

 

My line manager is a nosey cow but management and HR tend to sick together and back each other up so the only form of action may be to involve my union and make an official complaint. Is it worth doing this?

 

Apart from setting fire to my workplace as part of some mental plan of revenge what can I do?

 

Is it out of order to monitor ALL emails at work?
