How did El Zhar do last night?

Didn't see the game.

Does he look like he might make it for us?

Sorry just same thread below.

Please delete this one.

He played like the kid on the school playground who won't pass to anyone. I wasn't overly impressed to be honest; as with all the attacking players we seem to sign he just didn't look quick enough, although obviously very early days.

Guthrie looked by far the better player of the two anyway.

well he is a kid, to be fair. really is stupid to hear such comments about not being overly impressed with him after a ten minute cameo. but i guess that's the kind of thing we have to put up with these days. players, even kids now, have to perform from the off, and if they don't they are labelled flops.

he did ok considering it was his run out with the first team. he got into some good positions, but just didn't recieve the ball, which summed up our night.

I thought there was a reluctance to pass to him from our players,

Absolutely, I thought the lad made some good moves into dangerous areas and was clearly looking to receive the ball. Ten minutes before anybody tried to get the ball to him. Robbie was the first to try with a little header but didn't make it.

In all honesty I'm usually the first to leap to the defence of the players when people start having a go at them, and I certainly haven't labelled anyone a flop. Thing is first game or not I just wasn't overly impressed by El Zhar, so should I pretend I was?

I wasn't impressed by his pace and movement and they are just things that you either have or you don't and need to be able to change games at the highest level as an attacking player. To be fair people have been saying he's played well for the reserves, which I couldn't comment on as I haven't been to any of their games this season (although I do normally make a few).

He was actually on for more like 20 minutes, but I can honestly say that Ibelieve within 5 minutes of watching a young kid you pretty much know if he'll make it or not. Within 5 minutes of watching Steven Gerrard or Michael Owen you knew they'd be good enough. Wtihin 5 minutes of watching someone like Micah Richards or Wayne Rooney you knew they were making it. Within 5 minutes of watching David Raven or John Welsh I said they'd never make it, and youth internationals or not, they weren't even close to the required standard.

Kids have got to really have something about them to break through these days with the amount of competition. I haven't seen a single young player come through a t Anfield since Gerrard who has got me excited. Anderson looked promising but apparently he's badly out of form at present.

Our academy has been an abject failure so far. It hasn't produced one single player of note - I honestly don't know how Heighway keeps his job.

Anyone in a red shirt that is.

Did El Zhar even touch the ball? Thought he was very anonymous. Can't blame him though.

Christ you dont half come across as loving yourself sometimes. With your vision and insight why waste your time on here?

To put the plebs like you right...

I'm just saying it usually slaps you in the face when a player has genuine talent, they stand out immediately. We've been discussing young players who just aren't even close to good enough on here for years.

Its about time the likes of Heighway pulled his finger out of his *rse and developed a couple of players who are of some use to the first team.

the lad was thrown on for the last 15 minutes of a poor team performance, with a frustrated crowd on the players backs, and didn't even get a pass, so it's impossible to pass any kind of judgement on him at this stage.

Gerrard hardly touched the ball on his debut, it wasn't easy to spot the talent then.

What game was his debut?

First time I saw Gerrard play was against Celta Vigo at home when we'd been easily beaten away in the UEFA Cup. I think it was his debut but I'm not sure.

He was outstanding, hit some great long passes and put some strong tackles in - I thought immediately obvious, if not just how good he was going to be, at least that he was going to make it at the top level.

He had 18 minutes + 6 added time.

He hardly got a pass in the first ten minutes.

He must have been nervous as f***.

Didn't touch the ball for ten minutes and then whenever he did, he was just knocked off it.

lets sell him eh..

and gerrard didn't particuarly stand out as anything special. he was very raw and more of a destroyer when he first broke into the side.

He actually made his debut a couple of weeks beforehand against Blackburn at home, he came on with about 5-10 minutes to go and as he admits in his book, he let the occasion get to him, he touched the ball twice, once was a simple pass and the other time he crossed the ball about 30 yards to high! (all from his own book). He admits that once he touched the ball once he didn't want it again, he wanted the ref to blow the final whistle.

I for one wouldn't have spotted one of the worlds best players from that debut. Even the best have to start somewhere.

The first game I can remeber him playing in(or at least starting the game),was away to Derby(lost 3-2),a poor team performance and I don't recall him being outstanding or anything like that, but what stood out about him was the fact that he never stopped wanting the ball, always looked to attack and wasn't afraid to verbally have a go at some of our older players, all in all I thought he looked a great prospect on that showing alone.

You ceratinly couldn't judge any of the two young lads on last night's showing though, when the team were basically dire....with some being more dire than others ;)

I remember Gerrard coming on as a sub in the derby at Anfield, we were 3-2 up, and he cleared the ball off the line and then gave a clench fist/pumped arm salute. I loved him from then.

Yeah I remember that, quality. A few more displays of emotion like that nowadays would do his popularity a world of good.
