both have impressed me from what I've seen pre-season, but it is pre-season and the true questions will be answered when they have folk like Gerrard and Alonso picking passes out for them, and they are against fully fit top class teams.

I'd say that they have simply confirmed their status of potential for now.

who needs Kuyt when we have homegrown talent like this.

and fowler's backheel was a beaut.

Superb play from Robbie. It was a masterstroke bringing Fowler back. He might be 3rd choice (or even 4th, depending on who we buy), but there is no better candidate to fill that role. And he will score goals, and he will create goals. Rafa is no mug. Completely f*cking inspired signing.

I f*cking love Robbie Fowler and I predict a league medal fairytale end to his career with us.

I'm also drunk, but I mean every f*cking word. Inspired.

BOSS PLAYS DOWN LINDFIELD HYPE

Mark Platt 23 July 2006

Rafael Benitez has moved swiftly to play down the inevitable hype that will surround teenager Craig Lindfield's debut goal for the club at Crewe on Saturday.

Lindfield, 17, stuck the only goal of the game in Liverpool's 1-0 win at Gresty Road and his all-round impressive first half performance deservedly earned him most of the post-match plaudits.

It was a dream first senior appearance for the Wirral-born striker, whose goals fired Liverpool's youngsters to FA Youth Cup glory last season.

But while admittedly pleased with his contribution, Benitez is refusing to get too carried away at this early stage.

"He's a very good player, he has potential and his understanding with Robbie Fowler impressed me. He got himself into good positions and showed good movement

"I am really pleased with what he did on Saturday but he has to be stronger and you cannot build him up too much after just 45 minutes in the first team. He now needs to carry on working hard and get more experience."

Lindfield's strike partner Robbie Fowler also caught the eye during the first half at Gresty Road and Benitez added: "It's really important for him to be fit in pre-season because that could be the key to him enjoying a successful season.

"He has been training really hard. His movement, quality with the ball and vision is there for all to see. He can also score goals so it's really important that he stays fit."

In other words "get on the weights son!". He looked full of energy and seemed to do well at coming from the 'hole' or holding the ball up. Obviously it's going to be a couple more years before we know for sure though, let's just hope he keeps working hard!

Although that's a joke - I do wish we'd give more youngsters a go.

Where would Gerrard, Owen, Fowler etc. etc. be without getting given a chance.

Good enough is old enough.

Not all young players are at the same ability level. Owen, Fowler, Gerrard must have been special talents in training etc. so show that they had the potential to go onto become stars.

It'll be interesting to see how we do in the youth cup this season, nearly all of the side from last year are eligible again.

Don't think the current squad will do too well, as Hammill, Antwi, Roque, Anderson and Hobbs will be sorely missed (Nardiello is also about to leave). Two or three new players are needed I think....
