RAFA STILL SEARCHING FOR A RIGHT WINGER

Steve Hunter 14 July 2006

Rafael Benitez says he is still hoping to sign a right winger to improve the balance in his team but admits it hasn't been an easy task finding the right player.

Without speculating on names, Benitez revealed he has been in contact with one or two clubs regarding the availablity of players but has so far been left frustrated in his attempts to add a right winger to the squad.

"Everyone knows we are looking for a right winger and we are talking with different players," confirmed the Reds manager.

"The problem is clubs know we need a right winger so they put the price up on the player so maybe we will have to wait. For sure I think we will have the player soon but it's important to find the right player for us.

"Maybe we will also sign another striker if a good option becomes available."

If we're talking strikers then yes. Right midfielders, not so much

If trezeguet becomes available, i wouldn't mind seeing him here but i can really think of an out and out winger that we would want.

Am not getting my hopes up about alves so pennant and trezeguet for me.

I can see Rafa playing three in the middle, two wide and a single striker though. In that system we wouldn't need as many forwards in the squad. And when we do play 4-4-2 we'd still have 3 strikers + 2 forwards. Another striker would be a bonus, but i'd prefer Rafa to get his first choice RM rather than a second choice RM + a striker.

I can see where you're coming from there surf, but in reality, one up front is Crouch with no back up or alternative unless we buy

I'd also be happy with Bent. He's young, fast, hungry, improving, already a useful player - with more to come. He played on his own up front for Charlton, so he can hold the ball up and bring others in.

he didn't really play like that

I thought he played on his own up front for Charton last season quite a bit.

I take back the holding the ball up bit - that is obviously not his strength. But I do remember that he caused us a lot of problems.

He's by no means the finished article, but he could well go on to become a top player in the right set up. While I'd rather he cost less, it must be siad that if Andy Johnson is worth £8.5M then Bent at £10M is not too bad.

I don't want to sound totally sold on Bent though. Just saying I wouldn't mind if we signed him. I can see his attributes bringing something to the strikeforce.
