NEW boss Neil McDonald today swooped to make Liverpool defender David Raven his first signing for Carlisle United.

 

The highly-rated Premiership right-back today joined the Blues squad for the first day of pre-season training after agreeing a two-year deal at Brunton Park.

 

Former England youth skipper Raven, who can also operate at centre-half, had originally been targeted by former Blues boss Paul Simpson and a deal had been all but agreed when Simpson announced his shock departure for Preston last month.

 

The transfer was put on hold until United found Simpson?s replacement - and both McDonald and Raven last week said they were keen for the deal to go ahead.

 

United owner Fred Story said: ?We are absolutely determined that we are going to succeed this year and a signing like David shows we mean business."
