Big Money Signings

I read a lot (of nonsense IMHO) about how it's not Rafa's style to splash huge money on one player, or it's not the Liverpool way.

Every manager (bar Mourinho) is given a transfer budget. I believe that every club is either building their squad, or tweaking it.

If you're building your squad, then it's obvious you need to bring in more than one or two players, like we are. In this instance, you spread your transfer budget over maybe five players. Because of that, you cannot afford to blow all your budget on one player. Why did Veron, then Van Nistelrooy and Ferdinand go to Man Utd for huge money? They had a title winning squad which required just tweaking. Also, it helped that they were rich.

If Rafa had a huge transfer budget, we'd be able to build our squad quicker. The way Ranieri did a few years ago bringing in his army of 7/8 good players worth 100m. If Rafa had more money last season, we'd defo had gotten more players who'd cost a reasonable amount of money.

Remember in '95 we bought Collymore for what was then a British record 8.5m pounds. Not the Liverpool way? Get off it...

Hopefully in 2/3 seasons, we'll be strictly in the market for big money top players who can make the difference in the two or three important matches per season. Which would mean that we'd have such a strong team we'd only need minor tweaking. Or to freshen things up.

My point is that it's boll*cks that he wouldn't be in the market for top class players, such as Shevchenko, Eto'o or even Ronaldinho if they were available and interested.

whether its Rafa's style or not, we won't spend upwards of 20 million on a player unless a number of players went in exchange to bring that number right down.. Our record signing is £14 mill.... I know Shevvers is in a different class to Cisse, but the point is, its the board that dictate Rafa's style... not vice versa.

Exactly.

But I go one further and add that there is no manager in the world who would say no to top class players whom they believe can fit into their plans...again, I say that some would have you believe that Rafa doesn't like such players because "it's not his style" whatever that means...

I think the "rafas style" argument applies to say a player like Djibril.

Flamboyant - can produce the magnificent, and scores goals, but is woeful at times. Not the hardest worker, and selfish even.

This tends to be the case with a lot of big signings, especially strikers. Now, to be fair, most good strikers ARE selfish, so thats another issue. Basically Rafa wants team players - thats where the argument stems from.

Signing Collymore also put us on a very precarious financial footing from which we took a good while to recover. Personally I don't want to risk doing a Leeds.

If we can get two forwards and two right sided players in this close season, in addition to the three already comimng, we should have a fully competent squad, then we might just see all the cash going in one or two places.

I take your point. We seem to have the threads mocking calls for BiG NAmeS every transfer window, but as you point out, any manager with the right budget is going to go for proven quality.

Of course, if the manager doesn't have the budget then the argument becomes academic. I think he'll have the budget this summer.

Both of these statements are true. And rafa spent £10.5m on Xabi Alonso.
