Joel Matip on life at Liverpool and how to handle forwards like Diego Costa Jack Lusby on 15.09.2016 Liverpool defender Joel Matip has discussed his first months on Merseyside, and Friday’s upcoming battle with Chelsea striker Diego Costa. The 25-year-old signed for the Reds on a free transfer in February, making the move from Schalke 04 on the expiry of his contract in July. Making his debut for the club in the 5-0 League Cup victory over Burton Albion, Matip has gone on to impress in the Premier League against Tottenham Hotspur and Leicester City. His next challenge comes against Chelsea, and namely their star centre-forward Costa, but speaking on Thursday the defender stressed that he is not fazed by his vocal and physical presence. “If an opponent tries to talk to me during the game, really, I don’t give a f***,” he said. “I don’t think anyone is like Costa. You can play against players who like to make you uncomfortable, but not too many with his size or as famous as him. “It is always a fight against these big teams and you have to take on the battle. You have to go in there and fight, there is nothing else. “As a defender that is something you like – to go out there and win the ball. “But I don’t prepare only for Costa. I prepare for the whole team.” Matip has settled in quickly on Merseyside, despite spending the rest of his senior career with Schalke, and he believes his move to Liverpool will prove to be a “good one.” “The decision to go to Liverpool was made early,” he explained. “As soon as the opportunity came with the club and the coach I was sure I wanted it. “I hope everyone will say I am a good one, but I will need time to get better.” This is something Jurgen Klopp has reiterated, giving a glowing appraisal of the No. 32 ahead of Liverpool’s trip to southwest London. “[His start has been] good. I would say he’s still not at 100 percent fitness because he had a difficult pre-season,” the manager said. “His summer break was really difficult. He couldn’t train and for a tall guy like this fitness is a very decisive thing “It all looked a bit heavy but he is not like this now. “He’s a really smooth player and flexible. Joel is in a very good way.” Physically, Matip is getting back on track, but it is the Cameroonian’s mentality that is arguably most impressive. His confidence ahead of the Reds’ clash with Chelsea is hugely refreshing, and may give Liverpool the edge at Stamford Bridge. http://www.thisisanfield.com/2016/09/joel-matip-life-liverpool-handle-forwards-like-diego-costa/ Love the don't give a f*** quote.
