If Sterling had been happy at Anfield, a new contract having been signed, would Liverpool have accepted a £49m bid from one of their perceived rivals this summer? Unlikely. So while the deal represents a lot of money, although plainly not for City’s Abu Dhabi owners, it is not the deal of the century. And in holding out for as close to their £50m valuation as possible, Liverpool’s own pursuit of Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke becomes all the more intriguing. Liverpool chief executive Ian Ayre will doubtless recognise the tone of defiance from Villa counterpart Tom Fox over Benteke’s £32.5m release clause as the same spiel he gave City’s Ferran Soriano when talking terms over Sterling. More money, more problems. There is no logic in hoping Villa, aware Liverpool are flush with cash, lower their fee for a player they do not want to sell simply because his suitors value him at nearer £25m. At £25m, it seems a deal is impossible despite the cordial relations which exists between the clubs with Villa’s director of recruitment, Paddy Reilly, having returned to the Midlands last year having worked at Liverpool. So Liverpool must either walk-away and move onto other targets or get ingenious with an incentivised deal that allows Villa to get what they are looking for over time. That could mean a large chunk of the £32.5m being paid upfront and the remainder coming in realistic add-ons which should probably be appearance-based given Benteke’s recent injury record, rather than the fee being spread over the course of the Belgian's proposed contract. Yet Liverpool’s negotiating position is weakened by the fact Villa will sense they are anxious to complete the signing of a striker. For all the work that the club has done in the transfer market already this summer, manager Brendan Rodgers will be acutely aware the one position he has needed to strengthen for more than a year has still to be filled. If you look at the goals plundered by Liverpool during the last two seasons, then of the 153 scored 94 came from Luis Suarez (31), Steven Gerrard (22), Sterling (16) and Daniel Sturridge (25). Sturridge is not yet back at Melwood as he recovers from hip surgery and, when he does, he will discover the personnel around him have changed immensely. Liverpool lack goals even with the £29m acquisition of Roberto Firmino and if Rodgers believes – and he clearly does – that Benteke is capable of adding some much needed oomph to his side then, all manner of questions will arise if he slips through the net. If Liverpool are prepared to pay £25m then why would £32.5m (two-thirds of Sterling’s fee) be beyond them if they truly buy into Rodgers’ view? After all, City’s first bid for Sterling was £25m and the one that succeeded £44m plus £5m in add-ons. It might be too simplistic, but being unwilling to spend an extra £7m suggests there is some level of doubt in Anfield’s upper-echelons that Benteke is the answer. His statistics are impressive. Benteke has scored 49 goals in 100 appearances for a poor Villa side. But he is not a natural fit with Rodgers’ philosophy given the manager claimed a lack of movement and the inability of his forwards to press last season stifled the likes of Philippe Coutinho for chunks of the campaign. Who would cross the ball for Benteke? Would he be mobile enough to lead Liverpool's line? When, in recent years, this team were at their best it was because Suarez was harassing defenders non-stop and creating pockets of space for others to exploit. Rodgers will, of course, have spelt out his strategy and presumably answered these points behind-closed-doors. A tough season looms for Liverpool.
