"They're very supportive of their team. They like good football and they like their team to win, but not necessarily in an ugly way - they want their team to win in style." Nah, I'll just have 3 points, please.
Defensively I can't distinguish which one of our 3 CB is above the others. Overall they are pretty good, Carras positioning is better than Agger and Skrtel's but the two are on the other hand quicker and can therefore make up for their mistakes better than Carragher does sometimes. Agger I think is important because of his superior ball skills ahead of both Skrtel and even more so to Carra. His ability to quickly set up play from the defensive line to players further up field is crucial. Not to mention the more than decent left foot of his. Simply our attacking play benefits from having Agger in the XI. I feel our failure to keep pressure on the opposition (ie keep the ball in the attacking half for substantial amounts of time) is the most important reason why results have been against us so far this season. Better passing will relief some of load the back four has to carry.
A part of the problem might that our current attacking formation is very well adjusted for having Torres and Gerrard in it. When one or both of those to are out playing 2 strikers instead of 1 could be better. Neither Kuyt, Babel, Voronin or N'Gog seems very comfortable in that lone Torres role.
Had a mad thought, shouldn't Benayoun be able to play in CM role instead of Lucas (in the absence of Stevie and Fernando)? I'm neither Luke's biggest fan or his most fierce critic but I do think he has to take a lot of the blame concerning our poor passing and keeping the ball of late. I'm pretty sure Benny plays a more central role for Isreal does he not? Then let one of Babel, Riera or Dirk play in the Gerrard position.
