well, i said 'etc' for a reason - my working knowledge of City's midfield 15yrs ago isn't what it was. But having looked it up he had a platform behind him of Vieira (final year), Yaya Toure, Barry, Milner, De Jong, then Hargreaves, Garcia joined - seems a greater emphasis than we have of proper solidity in the mdifield to let him shine Incidentally - David Silva scored 4 goals in his first PL season, so perhaps only tore it up from season 2

The real quiz https://x.com/optajoe/status/2102421454457340325?s=46&t=S0LBdQiaWZdWT39o5mhR6Q he also ranked 4th in throwing a kettle over a pub

Firmino had a grand total of 2 goals v Leicester in the PL at this same stage of that season (+ 1 v Burton Albion in the Rumbelows) and he was playing for Klopp who'd been in the role for 11 months and the team running through walls, lead by the pressing King, Lallana. but this is all getting a bit meh - Wirtz needs to get better. could well do actually
-
i think David Silva was undoubtedly top quality but let's be fair - he benefitted from playing alongside Yaya Toure, Fernandinho, De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva etc - which are levels above what we have in our midfield currently

how we nearly signed Mbappe https://x.com/JamesPearceLFC/status/2102360210434392417?s=20

well, i'd agree he's not delivered anywhere near what was hoped for [considering people were saying we were gonna walk the league cos we'd signed him] and am not saying he's beyond criticism either, i've already said he had a stinker yesterday - but he also got slagged yesterday (for example) for not making the most of a s*** pass by another player - and the poverty of our play going forward yesterday was far from the fault of him alone. Is all.
-
the point being as an attacking outfit we crap for 89.5 minutes yesterday, like we were for much of 9 months last season and that's not all on Wirtz (i thought the consensus was it was all Slot's fault?) He went off with 20 to go yesterday and we didn't improve a jot. he scored a good goal this season that was ruled out for his team-mates transgression, he played great v Atletico and the profligacy of his team-mates meant his stats showed another zero for assists, rather than 3. He made passes yesterday short for Isak who was spinning in behind and then another pass in behind for a Barcola who came short. Those things are a wavelength thing of players that can easily improve on the training ground. I still think he can come good.
-
he had a stinker yesterday, no doubt - but he didn't hide, kept showing for it, kept f***ing it up and i have a level of respect for that he does also seem to have beome a bit of a lightning rod for the poverty of others performances too Isak scored his goal yesterday but did absolutely nothing else in 90 mins - same as Gakpo save for his run/cross for the goal. Barcola might as well have been in Paris. MacA and Dom largely s***e. Kerkez - a game runner but if they wont pass him the ball then so what? and Araujo has added some much needed defensive steel but i think his assist v Atletico will be the exception rather than close to any rule for his attacking talents through the season. To summarise the whole team was crap going forward yesterday but we got the win, so that's fine. It's on the manager to get this team playing better now. If he thinks that Wirtz needs dropping to make that happen then crack on and let's see it.

This is fun when they lost to Spurs (SPURS!) at home 1-6 they had Martial sent off in the 28th minute (were already 1-2 down, having lead in the 2nd minute). Then went 1-3 (30th min), 1-4 in the 37th, and 1-5 in the 51st (just outside the 15 min time frame but I’m guessing they weren’t playing well prior to number 5 going in)
