OK, we attempted to sign a defensive midfielder in Touchameni before the season began and ultimately didn't get him. Because we attempted this transfer it follows, we must have been concerned about that area of the pitch, right? Being unsuccessful in the transfer and not turning to a viable backup, indicates we'd made the decision to use squad players instead.
My memory is hazy but I think Klopp may have said as much when asked about the transfer, i.e. we couldn't get the player we wanted, so didn't get anyone else.
Now amongst all the speculation and conjecture I have two questions. Firstly, have we already spent the money intended for this player? If not, does it mean it's been earmarked for another player (or perhaps the Bellingham fund)?
Secondly, it seems obvious to every man and his pet canine, Fab's drop-off in form and Hendo's fading inability to cover the ground necessary has meant we've seriously exposed the defence and have been crying out for someone who can do the job in that position. If we had previous concerns as the attempted transfer indicates, why in hell haven't we got someone else in?
I realise we have a lot of midfielders on the books and no doubt the management knew that as well, yet they were still trying to bring in another?
Forget everything else, the failure to bring someone in for that position is, in my opinion, the main reason we've struggled so much this season.
