shawcross and turner are the ones to watch if we're looking domestically. in carra, skrtel and agger we have three first choice central defenders so one of these will need to be sacrificed to raise funds for any replacement. so who goes? aggers going to be a tricky one to get much for given his injury background though i think realistically both agger and skrtel should raise around the 10m mark should we be able to keep them fit. we'll be further hampered though this summer with the world cup taking place both in terms of recruitment and pre-season training (yep, another s***ty pre-season). we may find that with a little more senior experience via the domestic cup competitions the likes of ayala and kelly can step up to the first team over the next 12 months. that aside we're more or less in the same position as we were last year - 1 slightly dodgy cara, 1 injured agger, 1 recovering skrtel and an old fourth choice defender that adds some height but lacks pace. i think its far too early to be concerned at this stage, though if the 3-4 performances after the internationals dont see a significant improvement then i will start to worry.
