Alan Wiley to referee FA Cup Final

When was the original appointment made, the start of the season, or a couple of weeks ago?

If the latter, we can only assume they didn't expect us to win.

It was anounced before the semi-finals were played. Dean has only reffed one Liverpool game in his career at Sheffield United in the first leg of the Worthington Cup a few years ago.

"He refereed the FA Community Shield between Arsenal and Liverpool in 2002 and the Carling Cup Final between Chelsea and Liverpool in February this year."

Bennett refereed the Carling Cup Final with us and Chelsea.

This was the FA's screw up. They placed Mike Dean in a very difficult position by naming him referee before the final draw was even announced.

They probably thought Chelsea would beat us but even so.

I do have some sympathy for Dean, who would want to give up the chance to Ref the FA Cup Final, but at the same time know that if you do, you'll be subject to all kinds of accusations.

The FA are a bunch of faceless idiots with no touch on reality.

They could have waited until the semi-finals were over with before announcing the ref, and no-one would have been the wiser.

They have now questioned Dean's impartiality be replacing him.

Exactly, if I was Dean I'd be furious. The FA have effectively accused him of being biased, because of their own mistake.

That's a real shame for Mr Dean.

I think it helps us though as he could have overcompensated in his decisions to ensure he wasn't accused of any impropriety towards the NW team. Which probably would have meant very few free kicks around the edge of the box and no chance of a stone wall pen being awarded.
