an elderly neighbour has requested my help to set up their wireless network.

The only problem with this is I don't have a clue how to do this. They said they've got a Belbin router and the other stuff and have a Tiscali broadband account- now does anyone have any steps/tips on setting the fekker up?

It'll be a 'BELKIN' router.. You'll need to install the drivers for the wireless crads/usb adapters etc.

The router will have a config page (You'll need to look in the book for the IP address..probably 192.168.x.1)

Set your passwords etc, then tell the PC to look for wireless networks.

Job Done.

Why did you say you'd do it if you've no idea?

OK, went round and the network is configured correctly and connects.

The problem is that IE and OE still try to connect through his old ADSL dial up.

When I tried to tell the programmes to connect through the wireless I basically couldn't and none of the wizards did it either.

It's wierd- all the hard stuff has been done but I can't set the wireless connection as the default connection.

F*cksocks.

Try going into IE > Tools > Internet options. Click on the connections tab then delete any connections in the dial up section. Click on Lan Settings make sure automatically detect lan settings is checked. Then click apply restart IE and hopefully that will work

You'll also need to select 'never dial an internet connection'. and change IE to netcaptor if you know what's good for you!! :bleh:

Only thing i can suggest

Start>Programs>Startup

check to see if anything in has configured a dial up device to start when you switch on the pc

Start>Settings>Control Panel>Network & dial-up connections

Can you see any dial up connections, what do you see?

few articles

Delete the connection tiscali connection and go back to control panel>internet options>connections and run the internet connection setup wizard and choose connection to connect to LAN

Start>Settings>Control Panel>Network & dial-up connections, it should show the wireless network connection in this window

it doesn't- that's whats confusing.

I've a feeling he's missed a step on the way when he installed the Belkin router.

What's wierd is you can search and connect to that wireless network.

Its not a firewall blocking the connection is it??

Try turning any firewalls off, and then look in the connections part
