to all celebrating....

Can someone tell me how they work out which date it's supposed to be on? and the different variations of the length of time spent celebrating?

As it seems it can range from 1 or 3 days possibly even more..

and what's the driving around town in convertible cars tooting the horn and shouting all about? :S

thanks, my parents have both gone to haj this year and thankfuly we just got a call to say that they weren't involved in the incident earlier today.

in reality both eids are one day only, but usually eid alfitr (after ramadn) is celebrated over three days, and eid al adha (after haj) is celebrated over 4 days.

the months are based on the lunar year so the first of the month starts with the sighting of the moon, so the month last anything between 28-30 days depending on the appearence of the moon.

Cheers..

wow about your parents on the Hajj. Have you ever gone on it? I've seen a couple of tv programmes about this. and heard some student accounts - the whipping part sounds painful :(

It's terrible to hear about the crushes and stampedes - makes ya wonder about the organisation of this, altho millions of people in such a tight space is a nightmare situation to organise..

i was lucky to go there in 2002 with my newly wed wife and my brother, my father goes there every year as he is part of the organising committee for the the haj tours, and it does get very crowded there.

people from britain are lucky that we usually have good guides to tell us the best times to go and to take precaustions.

it was a great experience and i would love to go again if i can afford it

What happens if it's cloudy?

Is that where the Waterboys got the idea for their song?

I'll get my jilbab.

this area actually brings alot of different opinions between the different scholars, some think its ok to use telescopes to locate the moon, some think it has to be seen by the eye.

and you don't usually get clouds in the middle east anyway

I was watching 'Why Arabs hate the west' last night. And it seems Israel is the main reason. A singer Sha'aban is very vocal in his condemnation of the role of Israel in the middle east, the support of the US in maintaining Israel's power base and is an absolutely massive 'star' over there..

Dude, or Hassony, or whatever your name is :) ...are you familiar with this singer?

400 people killed whilst throwing stones at pillars meant to represent the devil? F'ck me, what century are we in again?

well 3 million people go to the hajj... stampedes are one of the unfortunate reality which cannot be prevented unless the number of people are reduced..

What do you mean about the people in covertables tooting horns? Seems like the way people celebrate. Didn't see any of that when I was around in Bangladesh last year, instead I saw the streets littered with blood with all the slaughtering of the cows. Good thing we didn't go driving that day!

depends what you mean by managed, the way the saudis organise the event is awful, the wahabies have way too much power on how the haj is controlled, and they are f***ing evil, when i was there i saw them kick a man close to death just because he had a camera on him. it doesn't matter what new technologies are there, the wahabies are very reluctant to accept anything new.

Are they obliged to accept everybody who turns up, i.e. no booking or quota-type system?

The problem is surely only going to get worse because the number of people going is going to increase further.

there is defintly a problem there, they have tried to limit the number of visitors each year, but alot of them come illegaly from africa.

they should limit each person to a maximum of one visit every 10 years.

Sorry made me laugh :)

Just imagined some bouncers outside the entrance, deciding who can go in by dress code i.e the length of their beard!

In manchester, we are quite near to Rusholme here and have a lot of Muslim students and around this time they are to be seen whooning around town in cars with music up loud ... and some of them drinking too :o

They were discussing the organisation of the stoning ritual last night on some news channel and basically they believe the problem lies in the 'flow' of the pilgrams who come in one direction to throw and have to turn around and walk back the same direction instead of progressing on in a uni-directional way..

I don't think you can limit people attending as that would 'go against' what the Koran calls for?
