Why is cannabis still illegal ?

I thought this would have been resolved years ago, and certainly in the UK I thought we would have sensible policies before states in the US.

It's not the biggest issue of the day, I don't even smoke it any more, but it's very annoying that people can't grow their own. I look at from a health point of view. You would get people out, gardening, running social groups and the like without being criminals. You can buy seeds and all the equipment but it would still be a knock on the door from the police away from being labelled 'cannabis farm gangs'

There was an article this week about how it seems to be an unstoppable tide now towards decriminalisation, because Uruguay, Spain and certain states in the US are legalising it. I don't see it on the agenda here though.

I remember Gordon Brown seeking scientific advice, and then doing the opposite because the daily mail told him to. Is it likely that a labour government next time might change policy on this ?
