how do I register a domain name

I want to register a domain and from a quick search it seems I have to pay a fee for someone else to register it for me. and to keep paying them every few years. Its not a big fee but nevertheless, is there a simple way to register my own domain name ?

 

I've never set up a website before and haven't really designed the content yet but wanted to get the name fixed to give myself something to work from.
