So close, yet so far

My flight last night from SF - I was posting on here from 35k feet as they had free on-board wifi - had an emergency landing at JFK. One of the three hydraulics on the plane failed, so we spent an hour going through emergency procdures, removing loose jewellery, sharp objects etc - coz that'll save us in the ensuing fireball - going through brace position, identifying on-board medics, or people otherwise trained in emergency procedures etc. It was all very surreal - guy next to me praying, another moaning, another spitting repeatedly ( ) until we came down with a regulation soft landing on a far-removed runway flanked by lights-flashing fire engines & ambulances.

 

So the point is - of my mini-ambitions, pressing emergency-stop on an escalator - did that at the WTC - another was using the slide on a plane and living; we were readied for this, I figured 2 things. 1 - I would get to use the slide or 2 - it ends in a fireball, but what would I know about that anyway? I didn't get to use the c***ing slide. I made my protestations to the captain on leaving - or de-planing as they like to call it here. Everyone else applauded. I thought he could have at least dumped it down without downing the wheels....

 

I'll never get that chance again.....(oh, mockers... )
