Berries that are Black.

Due to unforseen beer-related issues, my old mobile phone is now an ex-mobile phone.

I was due an update from Orange anyway, so have plumped for a (free) Blackberry 8520 Curve. It seems quite nice, but at this moment in time I know next to nothing about this interesting looking little device.

If anyone has one on here what suggestions would you have for those new to Blackberries..?

Read the manual - loads is explained in there, surprisingly.

Been using an 8520 for about a month - took a bit of getting used to as I'd previously used a Bold, and the keyboards are very different.

Not really the using of it, I worked everything out about the actual device within a couple of hours.

More interested in the stuff behind the Blackberry like Apps and suggestions of what to get/not get and so on.

Though re-reading my OP, I could have been a little clearer about this :)

Seems really straightforward and nice to use - really like the keyboard - reminds me of my old Palm C.

I used to have a BB.

The app I used the most was Mobipocket ebook reader.

There's also some sat nav thing you can download and get a 13 month trial for free. I'll try and dig that out, I used to use that quite a bit as I don't have a sat nav in the car (they're for tw*ts, let's face it!).

I already own a Garmin Cx GPS with Full OS Coverage of the UK and an Enhanced World Map (Which is free!) and I've got A MobiReader on my Palm, plus I've got my PSR-505.. So I probably won't be going for those..

But thanks for the tips!

Do Blackberry charge for all online usage? I'm paying an extra £5 a month for the blackberry online stuff - but she said for usual use that's more than enough for the months which sounds pretty good.

Strange question - it's your mobile network carrier that charges you, Andy....not BlackBerry.

Not sure about that - orange are charging me an extra £5 for using 'blackberry' web-stuff - they seemed to imply that it's not charged in the usual way (Although Orange are clearly going to be charging as well for usage outside the contract)

All seems a bit confusing to me!

What's confusing? Orange are charging you for using their BlackBerry service, not BlackBerry. RIM (BlackBerry) provide a service to the carrier....the carrier then provides a service to you. You are charged by the carrier for using their service.

Unless I'm missing your point by a mile?

I think I'm missing my point by a mile! :)

What am I get charged for from Orange then over and above normal charges? What do Blackberry provide that's worth £5 a month extra?

As I said, I don't know much about them!

Andy - that's a question you should ask Orange, as they'll be able to tell you what you are actually paying for. You've asked Orange for a BlackBerry and it's services and they've provided it to you.

A BlackBerry can retrieve mail have mail pushed to it via BlackBerry Enterprise Server (corporate setup) or BlackBerry Internet Server (consumer/carrier setups), access the internet, send PIN messages to other BlackBerry devices. Without the BlackBerry services you're paying for, you can't really do those things.

And check your PMs please.
