smoke detector started beeping at 4am

strangest thing last night - at 4.40am the smoke alarm started to beep - just one little one, and then nothing for a few mins, then another etc in our new house...

So we got up and had a look at it - says there's no battery inside ( ) the thing is absolutely welded to the ceiling. Can't be twisted or turned. No visible screws etc.

There's no indication of the manufacturer either.

 

how do i shut it up??????

 

hit it with a hammer?
