Does anybody know what the actual deal is with this?

As far as I was aware, a phone with flightmode, disables all wireless functions, cellular, wifi, bluetooth, gps, when enabled, leaving you to use the other functions safely.

Yet for the second time today I was told by staff on TAM, that there was no such thing as flight mode, that it didn't actually exist. SAS stewardess gave me the same spiel a few months back, both insisted i turned the phone off altogether, leaving me without an iPod either.

If i'd had a laptop it could be sitting there with wifi and bluetooth, possibly even cellular, signals spewing all over the place, yet on devices designed with this situation in mind, they insist you power off.

Now with Ryanair enabling in-air calls. What is the actual justification for this policy towards flight mode?
