hes also the drill sergeant in "the boys from compamy C" - the finest vietnam/"soccer" film of all time...his first film role.

He was an actual drill sergeant and was hired on Full Metal Jacket as an advisor - but Kubrick was so impressed he cast him

After expressing an interest in the part of Patrick Bateman in American Psycho, Leonardo DiCaprio was offered the role AFTER Christian Bale was already lined up for it, DiCaprio then dropped out and it was given back to Bale.

Not exactly strange

but a thank f*** for that moment

one of my favourite films almost could have been DiCaprioised

Al Mathews who played, Sgt Apone in Aliens, is;

Folk singer and musical performer who worked professionally while living in England. He later turned to acting, but continues to write and sing. Matthews is noted for having made two significant historical firsts. While on combat duty during the Vietnam War, Matthews became the first Black marine to be meritoriously promoted to the rank of Sergeant (E-5). Williams was also the first "black voice" on England's national station, 'Radio 1.'

He also played Benny Greens Dad in three episodes of Grange Hill.

I always liked Apone, he was a great character, and now I like him even more.
