Thrashing the Mancs
2021 – We thumped Manchester United 5-0 at Old Trafford, with Naby Keïta and Diogo Jota scoring before Mohamed Salah netted a treble as he struck in a club record tenth consecutive reds game. We went into the break 4-0 up, with half-time substitute Paul Pogba sent off for the home side after we had scored our fifth. This was Jürgen Klopp’s 200th win as Manager in a club record 331 games.

More trebles for
1984 - Ian Rush bagged a hat-trick in torrential rain as we beat SL Benfica 3-1 at Anfield in a European Cup Second Round encounter.
1998 - Michael Owen scored four goals, including a penalty, as we thumped Nottingham Forest 5-1 at Anfield. Steve McManaman grabbed the other, with Dougie Freedman on target for the visitors.

An Olympic champion
1908 - Arthur Berry was in the United Kingdom side that won Olympic gold by beating Denmark 2-0 in the Final at White City Stadium.

Trebles against
1925 - Frank Osborne scored the first three of his four goals past us for Tottenham Hotspur as they beat us 3-1 in a First Division match at White Hart Lane, the first of three consecutive League trebles he struck for the Londoners, becoming the first player in the Football League’s history to achieve that feat. South African keeper Arthur Riley made his reds bow in this game, becoming the first player born outside the British Isles to represent the club. Dick Forshaw netted our goal.
1936 – We lost 5-2 at Brentford with Jack Balmer and Berry Nieuwenhuys nabbing our goals. Dave McCulloch bagged a treble, the first of his seven goals against the reds, with Bobby Reid scoring the first of his five and Jack Holliday also on target.

Razor sharpened
1987 - Ray Houghton made his first-class reds debut as a rare Gary Gillespie goal was enough to hand us victory at Luton Town.
1960 - We also visited Kenilworth Road, when we won a League Cup Second Round replay 5-2, our first win in the new competition. This came courtesy of a brace each from Kevin Lewis and Roger Hunt, and a Dave Hickson goal. Gordon Turner netted one of his five goals past us, with David Brogan also on target.

Mo’s half century
2018 – Mohamed Salah reached fifty reds goals, notching twice, including one from the spot, as we beat Crvena Zvezda 4-0 in our UEFA Champions League group game at Anfield. Roberto Firmino had opened the scoring, with the final goal coming from Sadio Mané, having already had a penalty saved.

Also in Europe
2001 - We visited Boavista in the Champions League for our 200th game in European competition, with a Danny Murphy goal being enough to secure a point in the first group stage.
1972 - We beat AEK Athens 3-0 at Anfield in a UEFA Cup Second Round tie, with Phil Boersma and Peter Cormack on the scoresheet, and Tommy Smith converting from the spot. Brian Hall was playing his hundredth reds game.
1973 - Slobodan Janković struck a goal for Crvena Zvezda, also known as Red Star Belgrade, from thirty yards before Vladislav Bogićević volleyed in from a seemingly offside position. Chris Lawler bagged our consolation as we lost this European Cup encounter 2-1 at the same stage. Unfortunately, we also lost the Anfield return by the same score.

Istanbul despair
2007 - We lost 2-1 at Beşiktaş JK, leaving us with just a single point from our opening three Champions League group games, and teetering on the brink of early elimination. Steven Gerrard headed a late consolation after the home side had taken the lead through a Sami Hyypiä own goal, his second in five days, and a Bobô strike.

Blunting the Blades
2020 – Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota both struck as we came from behind to beat Sheffield United 2-1 behind closed doors at Anfield with left-back Andy Robertson playing his hundredth League game for the reds.
1953 – Jimmy Payne netted as we beat the Blades 3-0 in a top-flight fixture at Anfield, with Sammy Smyth bagging a brace.

Stan no longer the man
2007 - Steve Staunton was sacked as Manager of the Republic of Ireland after 21 months in charge in which he had overseen just six wins in seventeen games.

Red deaths
1981 – Left-half John Shield died. He signed from Bishop Auckland in December 1935 but made just one senior appearance before returning to his former club in October 1936.
1966 - Keeper Sam Hardy died in Chesterfield. He signed from his hometown club for £340 in May 1905 and had made 240 reds appearances, helping us to the League title in 1906 as well as winning fourteen England caps while at Anfield, and two FA Cups for Aston Villa after moving to the Midlands in May 1912.
1942 – Forward Harry Race died in World War II action in El Alamein, Egypt. He had joined the reds from Raby United in February 1928, scoring eighteen times in 43 games before being sold to Manchester City in August 1930 for £3,000.

Carra’s unwelcome record
2010 - Jamie Carragher scored a club record eighth own goal as we beat Blackburn Rovers 2-1 at Anfield, after Sotirios Kyrgiakos had headed in his third and last reds goal. Fernando Torres struck the winner, with all the goals coming in the second half. Martin Škrtel has since also put through his own net eight times.

First and lasts
1959 - Louis Bimpson played his 102nd and final reds game as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Portsmouth, with left-half Geoff Twentyman appearing for the 184th and last time. Ronnie Moran grabbed our goal early on in this Second Division fixture.
1903 – Full-back Joseph Hoare made the first of his seven senior appearances in our 3-1 top-flight defeat of Derby County at Anfield. Richard Morris, Jack Parkinson and Arthur Goddard bagged our goals.

Another trophy
1956 – We beat Blackburn Rovers 2-0 at Anfield to secure the Lancashire Senior Cup for the eighth time, in a replay staged five months after the first meeting, also in L4. Alan A’Court and Billy Liddell scored.

First and last caps
1925 - Tom Bromilow won his fifth and final cap for England as they held Northern Ireland to a goalless draw in the British International Championships at Windsor Park, with new reds signing David McMullan winning the first of his three caps for the home side, for whom Elisha Scott was in goal.
2013 – Jordan Rossiter debuted for England Under-17’s as they thumped Armenia 4-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Yerevan, with future red Dominic Solanke bagging his first goal at this level and Sheyi Ojo and future red Joe Gomez also in action.

2014 – Ben Woodburn played for Wales Under-17’s as they beat Montenegro 2-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Belarus.
2015 – Woodburn featured again at the same level, in a 1-0 defeat by Switzerland in Newport. On the same day, Bobby Adekanye bagged his only Under-17’s goal as the Netherlands thrashed Albania 5-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Wales.

Losing to the Mancs
1981 - Terry McDermott netted from the spot as Manchester United returned down the East Lancs Road with all the points, having won 2-1. Kevin Moran opened the scoring with Arthur Albiston bagging a late winner as Graeme Souness appeared for the 200th time.

Disappointment at Turf Moor
1967 - We drew 1-1 at Burnley with Chris Lawler on the scoresheet.
1914 - We did even worse, returning home on the wrong end of a 3-0 scoreline in another top-flight meeting, with keeper Ken Campbell playing his hundredth reds game. Ex-Evertonian Bertie Freeman bagged two of his nine goals against the reds, with Teddy Hodgson also on target for the home side.

Thumping wins
1896 - We beat Blackburn Rovers 4-0 at Anfield in a top-flight match, with George Allan, Bill Michael, Jimmy Ross and Malcolm McVean all netting. Keeper Harry Storer saved a penalty from Rovers’ Anderson.
1942 – George Mills and Jack Balmer were on target as we won 4-1 in a Wartime League game at Manchester City, with Cyril Done netting twice.

Venison back from Turkey
1995 - Barry Venison joined Southampton from Galatasaray for £850,000. He played thirty times for the Saints before retiring from the game a year later.

Management departures
2011 - Steve Nicol left as head coach of New England Revolution by mutual consent, having been appointed permanently in November 2002.
2012 – Paul Jewell stepped down as Manager of Ipswich Town, also by mutual consent, having led them to 29 victories in 85 games in charge since taking over in January 2011.
2022 – Midfielder Kyle Kelly signed as a professional, having joined the Academy in September 2020.

Penalty failures
1931 - Jimmy Hampson missed a penalty for Blackpool as we won 3-2 at Anfield, although he also netted two of his six goals against the reds. Gordon Gunson and Gordon Hodgson scored as we also benefited from a Stan Ramsay own goal.
1908 – Reds keeper Sam Hardy saved a penalty from George Dodd as we beat Notts County 2-1 at Trent Bridge. Jack Parkinson scored his fiftieth goal for the club as Ronald Orr also struck.

Other reds games
1970 – We lost 1-0 at Ipswich Town.
1964 – West Bromwich Albion beat us 3-0 at The Hawthorns with Clive Clark bagging two of his seven goals past us and Jeff Astle netting the first of his seven.

Young England reds
2008 – Future red Jonjo Shelvey bagged his only goal for England Under-17’s as they thumped Estonia 7-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Spain.
2012 – Jordon Ibe made his debut for England Under-18’s in their 2-0 friendly defeat of Italy in Mansfield.
2009 – Future reds Alisson Becker and Philippe Coutinho both featured for Brazil Under-17’s as they beat Germany 3-2 in a World Championship Finals game in Nigeria.
