Stereo cable question

I'm trying to connect my Xbox to my computer monitor - got the official cable and that works fine, but now trying to connect up the stereo cable from it as well. Problem is, I have these kinds of ends on the Xbox cable:

 

 

but my 5.1 stereo speakers on my PC only accepts a "Front", "Rear" and "Centre" connection of this type:

 

 

I can see splitters at Maplins that take two phono connectors and make one 3.5mm stereo connector, but would this work? Is there any connector anyone knows of to take one phono connector and change it into one 3.5mm stereo jack?
