We've been using this Ethereal "Network Protocol Analyzer" http://www.ethereal.com/ to help with some debugging problems and very good it is too.

 

We now have a requirement to measure the volume of internet traffic to/from certain specific websites for sizeing/capacity planning purposes.

 

While I think Ethereal could probably do this, I suspect it would generate a monstrous amount of data in the process. On this occasion we just need the quanitity of data sent/received, not the full detailed content of the data.

 

What would be an appropriate tool to do this with? I have a feeling Ethereal is a 'sledgehammer to crack a nut' on this occasion.
