Buying a used car

I have never bought a car in my life and I know very little about engines and exhausts etc. And I've never even browsed thro Autotrader!

my partner needs a car for the summer months in Shetland - hire car is working out v expensive. Public transport is nearly non-existent up there. So a small 1lt, cheap run around would be ideal.

 

Now, some questions:

 

Typically, how much would one be likely to pay for such a car? like a little micra/corsa etc

If you buy it in Manchester say, can you insurance it in another place? i.e. Shetland?

What sort of mileage is worth considering?

Is it true red cars go faster?

How do UK registration plates work? how do you know the year from it??
