An elderly woman had a lucky escape after a crystal ball set alight to curtains in her lounge, a fire service said today.

The woman, aged in her 60s, returned, to her home in Hunt Road, Poole, Dorset, at 2pm yesterday to find the property full of smoke and the curtains on fire.

Fire crews attended and put out the blaze and an investigation showed that a crystal ball placed on a window sill had refracted sunlight on to the curtains, causing the fire.

Watch manager Dave Cooper, of Dorset Fire and Rescue Service, said: "It was a most unusual incident. The conditions were just right with a low, strong October sun.

"The glass ball had literally refracted the light and set fire to the curtains.

"Luckily, the occupant was out and had closed the lounge door. She also had a working smoke alarm fitted but because the door was shut and she came back so soon, the smoke had not yet reached it.

"The lady was understandably quite shocked and called us straight away and then stayed out of the house - which again is the right thing to do.

"She asked us to take away the offending article - which we did of course, so it wouldn't upset her."

A spokeswoman for the fire service said that although it was an unusual incident, she advised householders not to place similar decorative pieces in direct sunlight.
