was out on the car, approaching a pelican crossing, car coming the other way. A fella ran straight out into the road in front of the car on the other side, it hit him and he just bounced off it back on to the pavement. I stopped and rang for the ambulance and went over to check the fella (the other car went down the road a bit and then stopped). He was completely unconscious but still breathing. The emergency call character was getting me to check him over, but his face was buried in his sleeve because of

the way he'd landed. When he was turned a bit to check the breathing his mouth was full of blood and there was a real nasty crack on the side of his head. After a minute or two he stopped breathing. I was still trying to get confirmation that an ambulance was on its way. Whilst I was on the phone there was a steady stream of people trying to help out - a trainee nurse was passing by and she tried to do the mouth to mouth but the poor girl was gagging every time she tried to do it because of the blood and snot everywhere, a fella took over from her, he got him breathing again, then a doctor from the local surgery arrived with some equipment, they got him properly breathing and his pulse going again. Paramedics arrived, quickly followed by police and then ambulance. The road was blocked off. THe fella was so big and heavy it took six of us to lift him on to the stretcher to get him in the ambulance. They were ages in there before they drove off so they were obviously having to do some emergency procedure in there. I know the GP from the surgery and he came out and went into the ambulance - when he emerged I asked him how the bloke was and he said he was alive but it wasn't looking good.

He was eventually driven off and because I was first on the scene and rang the call in they had me there to give a statement. They then got the call that the fella was likely to die and had to turn the whole thing into a scene of crime rathe than just an accident, So then I had to rehease the whole thing with the SOCOs. I was there about 2 hours in total.

The police rang lasts night to say the fella died but that he was as good as dead at the scene. Weird thing was it was like the second time he died that day because he had stopped breathing and had no pulse before he was revived at the scene.

The thing that has been going through my mind more than anything since, apart from the obvious shock of the fella dying and being involved in it, was the bottle of the two pedestrians who did the mouth to mouth - blood everywhere and obviously neither of them happy about doing it. Hats off to the pair of em, they could have been doing themselves a lot of harm.
