Credit cards

I have two or three cards, each of which has got a reasonably high balance on em. I'd like to transfer to a 0% balance but given that I expect my credit rating ain't the best, that may not be entirely possible - would I be better asking the current credit card issuers if they can reduce my interst rate and threaten with the transfer if they don't come good?
