Mondavi Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 Can anyone recommend a place to watch the Portsmouth game on September 15th ? Preferably Kowloon, as near to Mong Kok as possible. Cheers.
_00_deathscar Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 (edited) http://www.hongkongreds.com All games are broadcast at the Amici Bar in Wan Chai (about 20 minutes by MTR [train] from Mong Kok), which is where most expat-Reds go. Anywhere in Wan Chai is generally good with decent prices; avoid Lan Kwai Fong for football (no matter what anyone tells you) as it's rather expensive, and there's not many sports friendly bars/pubs there. Don't know of any reputable bars in Mong Kok (bit of a seedy area), but there is a Delaney's (Irish bar of course) in Tsim Sha Tsui which is about 5-7 minutes from Mong Kok, and should be broadcasting the game. There is also a Delaney's in Wan Chai. Game is early kick off (7.45 PM HKG time), so will be over by just before 10 and shouldn't be a problem getting back should you venture out of Mong Kok. Personally, I recommend going to Dicken's Bar in the Excelsior Hotel in Causeway Bay (just one stop further from Wan Chai) - great place with reasonable prices and food is also quite good. Then again, I might be lingering there so best avoided. Are you staying at Langham Place? Edited September 6, 2007 by _00_deathscar
Mondavi Posted September 6, 2007 Author Posted September 6, 2007 cheers for that mate, much appreciated. yeah we're at the langham place. there are two couples, and i'm the only one of us interested in the footie. The plan therefore is to go somewhere for an early bite to eat, and then a couple of beers in view of a screen showing the game - for me to ignore the others for 90 minutes getting the train upto Guangzhou the next morning, so early kick off is perfect too.
_00_deathscar Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 No problem, if you need anything else ask.
12twelve Posted September 7, 2007 Posted September 7, 2007 If you really want MongKok and something really local, head off to one of the local diners (cha-chaan-tang) near Portland Street, one of them is bound to have the matches on.
mercury Posted September 7, 2007 Posted September 7, 2007 Actually you can now find matches in some of the MacDonalds, too, but I'm only sure the one in Causeway Bay will show LFC matches. The downside of these local diners and Macs is that they do not serve alcohol.
12twelve Posted September 7, 2007 Posted September 7, 2007 i thought the local McDonald's only show a match per month?
_00_deathscar Posted September 9, 2007 Posted September 9, 2007 Yea I think so, you'll have to check their schedule. There's a fantastic Japanese place in Mong Kok, which also has a chain restaurant (originally based) in Tsim Sha Tsui ~ forgot the name though...
Guest spk Posted September 9, 2007 Posted September 9, 2007 out of interest how much is a beer out there?
_00_deathscar Posted September 9, 2007 Posted September 9, 2007 (edited) out of interest how much is a beer out there? In Wan Chai, a pint is usually between £3.50 - £4.50, special offers and happy hours not withstanding (seen it as low as £1.50 during Happy Hour back in the dark days of 2003, but it's usually about £3.00 - £3.50) In Lan Kwai Fong, a pint is usually between £4.50 - £7.00, special offers etc. Happy hour prices for Lan Kwai Fong are about normal prices for Wan Chai (3.50 - 4.50). I've seen ridiculous prices at some places though; think C-Club once charged me £8.50 for a pint. Oh, and Tribeca in Wan Chai charged £4.50 for a glass of tap water for people who wanted to avoid hangover the day after... Edited September 9, 2007 by _00_deathscar

There's a fantastic Japanese place in Mong Kok, which also has a chain restaurant (originally based) in Tsim Sha Tsui ~ forgot the name though... sounds good, according to hotel website there's a few japanese places right near to the hotel. have also made a reservation at Hutong in TST, on recommendation, table with view over the harbour which sounds good. I guess with having the shopping centre adjacent to the hotel there should be plenty of places to eat in there too? had a look at the website for dickens bar in the excelsior, sounds good for footie and food. will see if i can persuade mrs mondavi and the other couple to venture over to the Island saturday night
_00_deathscar Posted September 9, 2007 Posted September 9, 2007 Yea, this Japanese place I was on about is just about a minute's walk from Langham Place - which by the way, does have a decent food court so plenty of (cheap as well) places to eat in there. Might see you there on Satdee night then, how will I recognise ya? You be the one with the large out of date camera, big sombrero and Hawaiian top?
Dee Posted September 9, 2007 Posted September 9, 2007 were those GBP prices for beer??? I hope not - jaysus
surf Posted September 9, 2007 Posted September 9, 2007 i'm pretty shocked too. my memory is that prices were waaaaaaaay cheap
_00_deathscar Posted September 9, 2007 Posted September 9, 2007 When the bloody feck did the exchange rate shoot up to nearly 16 HKD to a pound? That was calculated to 15... Surf, when were you here? Back in around 2002-2004, prices were much lower; only recent shot up again about a couple of years back as HK rebounded from SARS and all that b******s.

Just got a new camera you cheeky bastid, so small I'll probably have lost it by then, dont own a sombrero, but I was eyeing up an hawaiian shirt the other day I'll be the one shaking my head at the ale prices
