House Renovation/Extension Advice

Will be doing an renovation-extension on my house soon. Fairly straightforward - extended Kitchen-living area, extra b/room upstairs, renovate (re-plaster, new floors, doors etc) and am wondering how much I should use the architect?

 

My main issue is that I need to control the costs tightly and don't want to pay the architect to project manage etc if I can do that myself. I think I already have a builder so may not need to go to tender/advertise etc.

 

My ideal would be have the architect do the plans/apply for pp/consult on design and then sign it all off at the end. No project management/tender prep.

 

Anyone done something similar before? Any advice/hints?
