We had a terrible incident on Sunday which ended in a mass brawl and one of my kids being punched by a parent. He's an Asian lad who quite frankly started the whole thing up. I could have personally feckin strangled him but of course it's one thing 15 year olds fighting and yet another when an adult starts wading in.

The repercussions are still being sorted but needless to say I spent a great deal of time filing reports, speaking with the boys father and various officials from our club and the local F.A.

I had two conversations which happened within a couple of hours of each other.

The first with the ref, an indian. He brought up the racial abuse our lad suffered, he explained that as a 'coloured' man himself he was even more sensitive about such matters.

Then the first team manager came on, he also the club's child protection officer. He's a great lad, a Sikh, 6'5" tall and played a very good level of football. He was explaining to me what it was like when he played, how there weren't many 'coloured' players and how he was always getting sent off after being racially abused and how he sympathised with my player.

I didn't tell either of them about the graveyard gang and how I had ben castigated and flogged in public for using the word coloured. I was scared they may have been Daily Mail readers too.
