Some of you may know, others may not. But back in the 70's there was strong talk about building a shared ground on Kirkby Golf Course. Even back then it was going to hold 70k.

I just wondered if this had of gone ahead, where would we be now and where would Everton be in terms of trophies, money, standing etc etc.

We'd be where we are now except without the new owners and Everton would be virtually bankrupt because crowds in the 80's were piss poor compared to now

thought there was another plan for one near Aintree Racecourse - though that may have been later.

I imagine Everton's end would be made of wood and need rebuilding by now.

70k in the 1970s would have incorporated much standing room so would have been renovated to all seating some years back and not be 70k anymore (without further tiers adding etc...)

dunno if it would have made that much difference otherwise - up until SKY came in both clubs were pretty much as rich as anyone in the League.

The only scheme of the type I can remember from back then was dreamed up between Shanks and John Smith, who wanted to build a new stadium not in Kirkby, but Aintree where the old WW2 Ammo works had been out by the Melling road, Shanks wanted 100,000 and Smith thought 75k more realistic - there was no talk of sharing though so far as I can remember, it was a purely Liverpool based idea arising from the difficulties they had with the council in getting permission for rebuilding the Kemlyn Road (63/64) and ongoing work on the kop and Anfield road ends....even more then than now, I doubt either club would have entertained a joint venture.
