Slavery

£440,000

Prescott was just on the radio talking about how proud we should be for leading the way in the abolition of slavery. Everyone seems to be ignoring the fact that the main reason it happened wasn't morality, but political expediency as after the Haitian Revolution the British wanted to avoid more Africans, who might be potential troublemakers, being brought over to their West Indian colonies. We only abolished the trade anyway, and British ships continued to traffic slaves regardless. Slavery itself wasn't outlawed until 1833.

A lot of the coverage of this has been very interesting and educational, but for someone like Prescott to try and dress the whole thing up as an example of evidence of Britain's innate support for freedom is laughable. He even tried to say that this support for freedom was particularly true of Yorkshiremen!
