Its not been a great day. I'm stuck in bed with the flu. I was supposed to go out for for dinner with a bunch of friends but cant. I managed to delete about 150 albums earlier on through sheer stupidity. Add in the football result and its not been a great day and then a friend sent me

.

Its Etta James performing "I'd Rather Go Blind" with Dr. John. Etta begins by just opening her heart and bearing her soul. Two minutes into the song, Mac Rebbenack shuffles on stage looking like he's been dragged out of the gutter. He doesn't attempt to vocally compete. No one could but through honesty and compassion, together, they manage to take the song to an even deeper level. At the end - emotionally worn out - they slump into each other's arms. Its extraordinary.

Its only then you notice that they are backed by BB King. Its from a show where Etta, Gladys Knight and Chaka Khan were the main guests. Aretha Franklin was originally supposed to appear but after she dropped out, Chaka agreed to do it. At the time, she was in the middle of a bad heroin addiction and it shows. She stumbles around, slurring her words really badly but she still manages to put in a great performance. The thing is she wasnt the only junkie on the stage. Both Etta and Dr. John were long term addicts but somehow they managed to control it better than she did.

You can see Etta, Gladys and Chaka singing 'Ain't Nobodies Business'

.

You can see them perform 'Precious Lord, Take My Hand' here.
