I can?t help wondering how all the takeovers of football clubs will affect the future of the Premiership, and football as a whole for that matter. The mention of a European Super League has often been scoffed at whenever the issue has risen in the past (and rightly so imo), but would anyone be surprised if all these entrepreneurs taking over clubs saw this as an inevitable conclusion?

These businessmen are all in it to make money. They say they want to win, but this is more because of the money made from winning than the glory that comes with it. If the issue of a European Super League came to a vote, I wonder just how many of these new owners would see the opportunity to get even larger TV deals rather than the fact only one team can win. Forget the tradition of the domestic league too, that isn?t going to be important to businessmen running their ?franchises?.

Don?t get me wrong, I?m happy this whole investment saga is over; it?s been going on for too long and it seems like we have chosen wisely; I?d just hate to lose everything that football stands for just for rich people to get richer.

Just a thought anyway.... maybe im just being too negative of all these new owners

I can see your point. I too am happy the takeover is finished, however I wish there werent any takeovers on such a scale. I fear, as you said, that the traditions of domestic football may be lost.

Would they set up a super league? I'm pretty sure a lot of them would, however I don't think it will happen. I don't believe the mid/lower-table clubs will take to this decision in a good way if the FA/UEFA did decide to do it.

Lets not forget, these other clubs do have a big impact on the Premiership, it will only take a decent few of them to put a halt to things if they were really against it. The press also I believe wouldn't agree with it, and the amount of bad publicity it would generate would hopefully put ideas such as that out of the FA/UEFA's head.

i heard on the BBC World Service that FIFA were against the idea of a Super League and have indicated that they would place sanctions on the players, clubs and countries involved.

after what has happened in Italy recently, the idea of a Super League will be off the table for quite some time.

Empty FIFA threat. What sort of FIFA competitions do they have without the players of top clubs? What's more, if a paycheck comes from a club that's larger than one that comes from a country....guess what the players choose?

It may be a while off but, if so, FIFA aren't the reason.

Wasn't the Champions League created because of the rumoured Super League ?

and if Platini gets his way and reduces the number of clubs in the CL, the Super League discussion may start again.

To be honest I agree with Platini about the reduction. I grew up with second place being a failure, these days fourth place is a success.

I agree with that, Kev. Money will never stand for it though.

The Times Football podcast this week was interesting. Gabriel Marcotti's

theory that the motive for all these takeovers by American (and other

nationalities) owners of Europes biggest clubs is to breakaway and

form a European Super League based on the franchise system of the NFL.

It would be a closed shop, no relegation/promotion with a centralised

tv/merchandising pot and revenues that will dwarf what the clubs are

getting now.

A frightening thought

UEFAs fault for arsing around with the competitions in the first place
