Giving a months notice

I've accepted a new job, but it starts fairly soon and i won't be able to give my current employers the full month notice.

 

Can they do anything? They can't take any action against me can they?

 

The start date is about 2 and a half weeks away so i can give them that, plus whatever holidays i've got left. So it won't be a kick in the a*** off a month, anyway.

 

I'm gonna drop in my notice tomorrow. Should i put down on it it something like "I can work up to and including (the date)"?
