I remember there was a Guardian article, in the summer of 2004, don't know how to even contemplate searching for it - Will probably knows it by memory. Anyway, Rafa had just joined, Owen left & Stevie granted us a year to see how things shaped up. The article's basis was:

May 2001, and a not-yet-21 year-old Steven Gerrard had just scored in the UEFA Cup final helping his club to an historical treble. This should have proved to be the launch-pad to a career littered with honours and medals, league championships aplenty.

Little over 3-years later and one of his primary foils - Michael Owen - has moved on to pastures new, to join the Galacticos at Real Madrid, Liverpool have continued to be perennial underachievers & Stevie promises to be yet another fantastic talent wasted at a club these days associated with being the nearly-men.

blah blah blah

...and that's why Stevie should leave Liverpool & join Chelsea, to fulfill his dreams & potential.

Since then? Owen's won nothing, left Real & now plays for Newcastle.

Stevie has won the EC, an FAC & been player of the year.

Apart from the Evening Standard and Daily Mail, every article I saw after Stevie's [2nd] u-turn praised Gerrard and praised Liverpool. Almost as if it was the perfect 'council estate, hometown boy, great traditional club turns down evil money men of football' kind of story.

We should save all these, then mail them off to the gob***es, to remind them of the crap they write.

Or just not bother reading them in the first place. It's better for your heart.
