The point here is you would think you would get approval to bid up to a certain amount, knowing full well that you would have to break the British transfer record (Newcastle made their valuation known pretty much early doors). Wirtz transfer was rubber stamped long before negotiations started and a fee was agreed.

A player like Wirtz has so many intangibles. He instantly gives you the ability to attract top players. I am sure Isak saw Wirtz and thought, I want to be on the end of his balls.

Plus he realised Chelsea have a sh** show of football operations with constant turnover of managers. He probably felt ours was a more stable environment for him.

We will have significantly upgraded a team that won the league with a net spend of £194m. Pretty impressive.

Yes after d****ng for a while and letting Utd slide in. The transfer market for strikers is hot and they needed to move quickly given their previous experiences. As someone mentioned early, they don't have the luxury of being a big club or having a vision they can sell to potential signings. Maybe it would have made no difference.

They initially bid €75 million upfront (approximately £65.5 million), plus €5 million in performance-related add‑ons. RBL wanted £70 million upfront with additional €5 million. I believe they also wanted a sell-on clause. Newcastle could have easily offered what they wanted knowing the desparate situation they were in.
