  1. I think even the Americans would be mad to take £160m for our three best players and not give any sort of cash to replace them. Well you just ignored the point I made - if wingers are sold, then they wont need to be replaced as there will ample cover. The money could easily be funnelled elsewhere. Jovanovic can play striker anyway. Two from Benayoun/Riera/Babel would be my preference, with whatever money he may get given as a transfer kitty all spent on as good a LW as we can find. The striker problem is less of an issue this coming season anyway. For a start, we'll have Torres, Ngog, Kuyt and Jovanovic. All able enough, plus the prospect of Kuyt moving up top is greater this season now that we have Maxi who can operate in a similar run-around-a-lot role on the right. Add to this that our money is limited, who could we get that is of sufficient quality to better that front line? Thats without even addressing the issue as to whether it would be wise to spend big on a player that is simply a backup for Torres.
  2. If its wingers that our sold then thats not strictly true.
  3. Hes been on a good run, no more than that. His form will wane again next season and he will be back to an average player. Look at the squad too. Assuming we sell one of Riera and Babel, and bring in another good left winger, we'll have riera/babel, player X on the left and kuyt and maxi on the right. It makes economical sense in my eyes.
  4. Elaborate then.
  5. The problem with this boycott, or indeed a boycott for anything, is all about finances, as well as how people perceive the game. For a lot of people a ticket for a liverpool game is a rather costly piece of paper, and despite your heart being in the right place I cant see people who have spent their hard earned cash on a ticket being prepared to not turn up as some sort of protest when: a) it will mean them essentially losing money b) They have no idea if other people will actually follow through with the idea. Hence they could be left slightly red faced and outside on their own. Aside from that, you say a PR war will be won. Question is, will the americans actually care? I doubt it. They already know people dont like them as the owners, but that hasnt shaken them at all - I will put my neck out here and say if there hadnt have been a falling out between Hicks and Gillette, theyd be very happy to sit on their thumbs whilst the club does what they wanted - make them money. Id also like to add that clearing a stadium for one game probably wont phase the owners either. Firstly, they will recognise the efforts and planning of thousands of individuals to undertake such an event, and that despite being hated on for many years, that such an event will be the first time. Theyll just think it will be a one off. If anything, the only way to get through to them is an extended boycott of games and merchandising - of course that is a logistical nightmate and nigh on impossible.
  6. I must say that I do find some of the transfers put forward by the OP both amusing and slightly bizarre. Even in a dream land of infinite money, some players you would like rid of would be able squad members, at the very least. Anyway, people I would like to see / think will move in the summer are: Ryan Babel / Riera - Tbh, although Riera is obviously the most effective for our team at the minute, I reckon a good performance in a World Cup appearance could easily up his value by a few million. If things pan out this way, I think it would be fruitful and wise to cash in on a player, who at best, is adequate. Add to this that Babel offers the most potential long term, even if he is playing like an amatuer at the minute, I think Riera going out of the two would be the best option. All things considered though, in reality I reckon Babel will leave. Which wont neccesarily be bad if we have Birmingham bumping up the sale value again. Degen - One attacking right back is enough in any squad and Glen Johnson is that man. Also seems relatively inept at defending and has absolutely no positional aware. Someone needs to tell him hes not a winger. Benayoun - He had a patch of good form, but thats all it was. When people criticise some squad members for not being up to scratch, I usually chuckle inside when Benayoun is omitted form the list. As a sub, hes good. The big question is, though - is he good enough for a regular starting place? In my eyes anyway, no. Add to this train of thought that, in Maxi, we now have a player who can cover the same positions, I think Benayoun as an asset should be cashed in. £7m-ish and I'd be happy to let him leave. Those players, plus the dross from the reserves who just wont make it, and I think Rafa has excreted as many underperformers from the squad as he can. As an aside, I dont get the Lucas hate right now. Last season it might have been warranted but this year he has been far more solid and is worthy of his place in the team. Overall though, I would agree with the sentiment of having him as 3rd choice. I reckon that was Rafas plan at the start of the season, but Aquilani has been as useful as bucket with a hole. Similarly though, I dont want to, and nor do i think that Aquilani will leave this summer, for two reasons. Firstly, Rafa has already made a mess of one £20m signing - I dont think he'll want to admit to making the error a second time, and by selling that is the impression he will exude. Secondly, he just needs time to settle in.
