I believe the New Yorker magazine has taken to spelling it with an umlaut....

That's no umlaut, by God ? that's a diaeresis. And there's another ?o? in front of it; the diaeresis tells you that the two vowels are to be pronounced separately, as in ?naïf?. They also reported that Bush got ?reëlected?.

 

Some American president once said that the hyphen was ?unAmerican?.

So if you are from this side of the pond, the convention would be to use the hyphen?
