Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has taunted Merseyside rivals Everton over the signing of Momo Sissoko.

Everton made a concerted effort to sign the Mali international over the summer, but were beaten to the punch by Liverpool.

Benitez worked with Sissoko during his time at Valencia and the Reds boss has dubbed the midfielder 'the new Patrick Vieira'.

Sissoko has impressed for the European champions and Benitez admits he was never worried that Everton would pip him to the player's signature.

"We had an advantage over Everton," said Benitez. "I already knew the player.

"He had good memories of winning trophies with me at Valencia.

"We knew Everton were interested, but it was easy to sign him."

The 20-year-old has quickly established himself in Liverpool's engine room and has no qualms about snubbing a move to Goodison Park.

Sissoko said: "Any player in the world would have done the same as me.

"Between the two offers, I had to go for The Reds because they are the champions of Europe and I already knew Rafa Benitez.

"I am well prepared for anything the Everton fans have for me. I'm sure they will whistle at me from the first minute, but it doesn't worry me."

Typical of Sky to phrase Benitez's quotes as taunts. They weren't, they were just statements of fact by a person who is not a native English speaker. Nasty feckers after any kind of controversy they can find. I can't wait until they're forced to give up their monopoly on the premiership viewing rights. Might make them go for a bit more in terms of quality and less of the quantity.

This is the bit that impressed me :

Rafa says Momo?s energy is still astonishing: ?He has so much energy you wouldn't believe how much he runs during a game. Every game he runs more than 11-12km. One game, Crouch ran more than him, but normally it is Sissoko who runs most. It depends on the position, but most of the other players run 8-10km, midfielders maybe a little bit more.?

Amazing work rate, and also the fact that one game Crouchy ran more !!

Momo is gonna be really scary in a coupla years of working with Rafa and Co

but Crouchy's strides will be about 4 times longer than Momo's, so you have to take that into account ;)

Crouchy takes one step and it's a kilometre!
