Maybe not the correct term for this such genre.

But any recommendations in the ilk of SE7EN and the bone collector?

Well suspense action thrillers, they dont have to contain cops but its a bonus.

Similar genre "Arlington Road". I assume you have already seen it, but if not you should go and get it. Great movie.

Similar genre ? Both excellent movies with a twist but not in the same genre.

kiss the girl and along came a spider , although the books are much better

I agree with that, especially Kiss The Girls. Much better book than the film.

Sea Of Love is a decent film and Fear isn't too bad.

Tep - a rare but good one, if a little clichéd at times - Tim Robbins is great in it.

Not all are cop movies but they've got elements of what you're looking for and are decent movies.

Chinatown Excellent

The Game Pigging Awful

L.A. Confidential Superb

Leon Excellent

Man on Fire Average

Memento Good

Miller's Crossing Excellent

Minority Report Nice idea, poor execution - a bit like Mission Impossible goes futuristic

Mystic River Excellent

The Negotiator Average

The Usual Suspects Superb

I'd add:

Bad Lieutenant Excellent

City of Industry Very Good

Serpico Excellent

Public Enemy Superb

White Heat Superb

Badlands Superb

If you fancy something not so modern check out Stanley Kubrick's The Killing, (1956).

A peach of a movie, 50 years old now and the guy was in his 20s when he made it. If you have wondered where Tarantino got his idea for Resevoir Dogs then watch this.
