Legal/Consumer question on car repair

So had a part fitted to the car (Hyundai) less than 12 months ago at a cost of £600 by independent garage who claim to have fitted a genuine Hyundai part. Part has now failed and independent garage said it was out of warranty due to mileage. When I spoke to manufacturer they told me it was 2 year and unlimited mileage on the warranty and so would be covered. A week later and the garage are now trying to tell me the car needs to be taken to Hyundai by us to determine the fault to the part and then if Hyundai honour the parts warranty we will still have to stump up for the labour.

Am I badly out of touch or am I right to think that all this is the Independent garages issue and cost to sort under sales of goods as they provided and fitted the part?
