John Toshack - The Manager

Managed Lisbon, Real Socieded, Real Madrid twice(!), Besiktas and Wales, but hasn't managed in the English top flight division since his first stint with Swansea from 81 to 83 after he secured three promotions in four seasons.

He'd have been an obvious candidate for us, yet we passed him over five times when he could still have been a viable option (he joined Real Madrid a second time a year after we appointed Houllier).

And in all that time, no top division English sides contracted him either.

What was the story here? Pretty odd to have a British manager so well regarded in Spain yet utterly ignored in England.

Maybe it’s cos he seemed to come over as a little bit bonkers?  Possibly didn’t sound so much of a nutter in Spanish.  
 

I remember when he got the Wales job he set them up to play at home in a 3-3-3-1 formation he had just thought up, proper made up with himself, and the poor gets on the pitch were almost in tears trying to work out where to stand and which way to run, and it was 0-3 by half time, maybe 0-5 at full time, or something like that.  Was like every forward pass the opposition played turned into a 3 against 1 counter attack.
