Shankly - Paisley

[Sir Tokyo Sexwale]

At the time, in 1974 after winning his second FAC, the resignation of Shanks shocked the club. Walking away from the club he loved with no apparent succession in place, Bob Paisley taking over the reins somewhat reluctantly...

For no apparent reason, I was wondering the other day - what course would the club have gone on had Shanks NOT retired then - he was 61 - but continued for say another 4 years until 1978. Let's assume the unexpected heart attack in 1981 wouldn't have been prevented or hastened by doing so...

Impossible to say obviously, but I'd be interested in the opinions of those old enough to have a valid opinion, I was only 3 at the time.

Maybe Paisley did, or would have, pulled the strings quietly & invisibly so nothing would have been different really?
