Educating people

Having a chat with someone today about generally ignorant people. I said a decent education system could get rid of at least some of a person's ignorance and prejudice, but he maintained that if a person is - for want of a better phrase - that stupid, no amount of teaching was going to change that.

 

Is my optimism misplaced or is his cynicism unfounded?
